An emergency operation is ongoing to contain a fire at a fuel depot in Kalou, Conakry, the morning of Dec. 18. Authorities have cordoned off the area of the port as firefighters battle the blaze. According to initial government reports, an explosion occurred at the depot around 00:01 Dec. 18, igniting the fire and killing at least eight people and injuring 84 others. As a precaution, the government is closing all schools and petrol stations except for emergency services. Public and private sector workers, except for those in security or medical sectors, are advised to also stay at home.
A heightened security presence will likely continue in the affected area until the situation stabilizes. Associated transport, business, and fuel disruptions are likely over the coming hours. Evacuations are possible.
