Heightened security is likely in parts of Conakry over the coming hours after protest activity and roadblocks were reported in parts of the city Dec. 6. The demonstrations and traffic obstructions have impacted Route le Prince between the Bambeto and Hamdallaye traffic circles, as well as the area between Bambeto and Ahmed Sekou Toure International Airport (CKY). The reported purpose of the protest activity is to denounce deaths incurred during previous clashes between demonstrators and security forces along Route le Prince. Clashes left at least one person dead and another injured during a similar demonstration in the area Dec. 5. Scuffles were also reported in the Cosa/Bantounka area Dec. 5-6; additionally, disruptions to traffic and school classes were reported in the Cosa/Bantounka area Dec. 6.
Similar demonstrations and clashes are possible in Conakry over the short term. Lingering transport and business disruptions are likely in areas subject to protest activity and scuffles between demonstrators and security forces. Authorities may close roads and shut down public transport routes to prevent would-be demonstrators from gathering. Protests and authorities' response to them may cause flight disruptions at CKY.
