Iraq: Government workers protesting in eight governorates, including Baghdad, Dec. 2
Protests ongoing in eight governorates in Iraq, including Baghdad, Dec. 2. Increased security, localized disruptions likely.
Government workers are protesting in Baghdad, An-Najaf, Al Karbala, Dhi Qar, Basra, Al Muthanna, Ninawa, and Al-Qadisiyyah governorates, Iraq, Dec. 2. Protesters are demanding the adjustment to the cost of living of the salary scale for government workers. Demonstrations are occurring in front of each governorate's offices. In Baghdad, the protesters gathered in front of the Ministry of Finance. In Basra, the demonstration is occurring in front of the Al-Faw Grand Port "Route of Development" project, which Prime Minister Muhammad Shi'a Al-Sudani is scheduled to visit.
Authorities will almost certainly maintain a heightened security posture in the protest areas until the situation stabilizes. Localized transport disruptions are likely through at least late Dec. 2 in all eight governorates. Violence cannot be discounted should security personnel move forcefully to disperse the protesters. Further related protests are possible in the coming days.
Avoid the protests as a standard precaution and to mitigate likely ground travel delays. Plan for road travel delays in and near the protest area. Heed instructions from the security forces. If any violence erupts nearby, immediately depart the area and seek shelter at a nongovernment building.
