Unionized workers in the commerce, tourism, and services sectors will strike and stage protest marches nationwide, Dec. 22. The CGIL (General Confederation of Italian Workers) and other unions are calling for improved employment contracting arrangements. In Rome, a protest march is taking place between Piazza Esquilino and Piazza Santi Apostoli, where a rally will be held from 11:30. Other protests are planned in Cagliari, Milan, Naples, and Palermo. The demonstrations are likely draw several thousand attendees, based on previous events.
Authorities will almost certainly monitor the protest marches as a precaution. Moreover, road closures and/or detours will be in force on several thoroughfares along or near the march routes. Associated public transport disruptions will also probably occur in the surrounding areas. Violence is not likely.
