Jordan, Lebanon, PT: Nationwide pro-Palestinian strike ongoing in Jordan, Lebanon, and Palestinian Territories Dec. 11

Several countries are answering a call for a global strike by the National and Islamic Forces in the West Bank to demand a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas and show support to the Palestinian people as of Dec. 11:

• Jordan: Labor unions, private companies, institutions, and schools in Jordan began a nationwide strike on Dec. 11, following a call for global action launched by activists on social media demanding a ceasefire in Gaza. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) in Jordan also reportedly declared a general strike and closed all its facilities in the country.

• Lebanon: The government announced the closure of all offices and institutions nationwide on Dec. 11. Several labor unions joined the nationwide strike.

• Palestinian Territories: A general strike affecting public transportation, education, and financial sectors is ongoing. Organizers also called for related protests in cities across the West Bank.

Other countries in the MENA region may join the action through strikes or spontaneous protests. Demonstrations will likely materialize near diplomatic missions and offices, major government buildings, universities, and mosques. In Egypt, Jordan, and Lebanon, protests could occur near their respective borders with Israel.

Localized transport and business disruptions are likely in the affected countries for the duration of the action. Organizers have called for related protests globally. Officials will almost certainly deploy a heightened security presence in areas that are subject to protest activity to monitor gatherings and manage crowds. Clashes between protesters and security forces are possible, especially in the West Bank, which has been subject to significantly elevated levels of violence since Oct. 7.
