Activists to protest in front of National Assembly building in Panama City, Panama, from 09:00 Jan. 2. Tight security, disruptions likely.

Warning

Members of the Union of Construction Workers of Panama (Sindicato Unico Nacional de Trabajadores de la Industria de la Construcción y Similares, SUNTRACS) plan to protest in front of the National Assembly building in Panama City from 09:00 Jan. 2. The purpose of the action is to demand the government immediately close the Cobre-Panama mine, stop persecuting members of the union, and that the government reopens SUNTRACS bank accounts. It is unclear how many demonstrators will attend.

Localized disruptions to businesses, public transport, and public services are likely in the area. Police will likely deploy to monitor the demonstration and may move to disperse protesters, which could prompt confrontations.

Avoid all demonstrations as a standard precaution. Seek alternative routes to circumvent the protest area. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
