Peru maintains state of emergency on and near highways through at least Jan. 5

The government of Peru is maintaining a state of emergency on all national, regional, and departmental highways as well as areas within 500 m (1640 feet) of them through at least Jan. 5, Under the state of emergency, some rights are suspended, including the rights to assembly, transit, and freedom from warrantless searches, and the armed forces are authorized to engage in law-enforcement activities.

Police and military personnel are likely to deploy on major highways, such as the Pan-American Highway, and may set up checkpoints and review the identifications of travelers

Heed the directives of the security forces. Avoid all protests.

The state of emergency was declared in response to major nationwide protests held Dec. 7-9. While the protests have largely subsided, the state of emergency remains in effect.
