Opposition activists plan to protest in several cities across Slovakia from 18:00 on Dec. 19. Heightened security likely.
Opposition politicians have called for protests in several cities across Slovakia from 18:00 Dec. 19. The purpose of the actions is to denounce a government plan to dissolve a special prosecutorial office in charge of investigating corruption. It is unclear how many participants may attend; however, previous demonstrations Dec. 7 and 12 drew several thousand participants. Protests will occur in cities including:
Banska Bystrica: Stefan Moyzes Square
Bratislava: SNP Square
Nitra: Freedom Square
Presov: Legionar Square
Trencin: Sturov Square
Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near demonstration sites. Additional demonstrations are possible nationwide. Low-level confrontations between protesters and law enforcement officers cannot be ruled out.
Avoid the affected areas as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near the protest sites. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance.
