Albania: Opposition protests in support of former prime minister likely to continue in Tirana through mid-January
Protests backing ex-premier Sali Berisha likely to continue in central Tirana, Albania, through mid-January. Heightened security likely.
Opposition activists will likely continue daily rallies supporting ex-prime minister Sali Berisha in Tirana through at least mid-January; Berisha was placed under house arrest on Dec. 30 due to an ongoing corruption investigation. Supporters of Berisha have rallied outside his home on Mustafa Matohiti Street in the afternoon or evening since Jan. 2. A Jan. 7 gathering drew hundreds of participants. As of the afternoon of Jan. 8, all protests had occurred peacefully.
Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely daily in the afternoon and evening. Confrontations between protesters and law enforcement officers cannot be ruled out.
Avoid the affected area as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near Mustafa Matohiti Street. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
