India: Unionized farmers likely to continue ongoing series of sporadic demonstrations in Uttar Pradesh State through at least early January

Unionized farmers likely to continue staging sporadic protests in Uttar Pradesh State, India, through at least early January.

Warning

Farmers represented by the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU, or Indian Farmers' Union) will likely continue their ongoing series of sporadic protests in Uttar Pradesh State through at least early January. The purpose of the action is to address various long-standing agriculture-related grievances. In recent weeks, union leaders have organized several demonstrations, including those held near the Noida Authority office in Sector 6 of the New Okhla Industrial Development Authority. On Jan. 5, farmers plan to protest in all districts of the state. Protest participants will deliberately attempt to disrupt vehicular traffic in Noida. Some reports indicate localized transport and associated business disruptions are already occurring in the city. Farmers staged a previous protest march in Muzaffarnagar Jan. 2-3.

Additional demonstrations of varying types are almost certain in Uttar Pradesh over the coming days. Potential gathering sites include district collectors' offices, as well as other prominent government buildings, public squares, sports fields, and major thoroughfares. Participation will probably vary by locale; previous demonstrations have attracted hundreds of attendees. Authorities will almost certainly monitor any such rallies and may move to disperse overly disruptive crowds. Clashes between police and demonstrators cannot be ruled out. Demonstrators could block roadways, prompting localized transport disruptions.

Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Allow additional travel time near gathering sites. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
