An electrical short circuit reportedly caused a fire, which subsequently resulted in explosions at a warehouse belonging to the 22nd Brigade, 17th Division of the Iraqi Army in the Mahmudiyah area of Babil Governorate late Jan. 22. Officials have denied earlier reports of airstrikes targeting the facility.
Authorities will almost certainly maintain a heightened security presence in the affected area into at least the early hours of Jan. 23. Officials may close local roads or issue evacuation orders depending on the needs of the emergency response.
Avoid the scene of the fire until authorities completely extinguish the blaze and give the all-clear. Seek alternative routes to circumvent the affected area and any disruptions. Consider remaining indoors if heavy smoke is in your area, especially if you suffer from respiratory illness, such as asthma, or conditions that lead to increased risk from smoke exposure. Eye irritation is possible; flush irritated eyes with copious amounts of clean water. Adhere to all instructions issued by local officials, including any evacuation orders.
