Iraq: Unionized public workers of several governorates in Kurdistan region, Iraq, continue comprehensive strike Jan. 30
Unionized public workers continue comprehensive strike in several governorates of Kurdistan region, Iraq, Jan. 30; business disruptions.
Unionized public services workers in several sectors, including education, healthcare, and electricity workers, are continuing a comprehensive strike in the Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, and Halabja governorates in the Kurdistan region of Iraq on Jan. 30. The purpose of the action is to denounce delays in the payment of employees' salaries. The Kurdistan Regional Government announced the situation was due to a delay in a payment from the federal government. While labor organizers have not announced any protests, demonstrations are possible throughout the impacted governorates. These could occur in front of public offices and public squares.
Disruptions to business operations are likely, particularly if the walkout is prolonged or receives support from other unions. Interruptions to healthcare staffing will likely prompt delays and cancellations of appointments and other healthcare services. If protests materialize, localized transport disruptions are possible near demonstrations in urban centers, especially if protesters march along or block roads. Clashes between police and protesters cannot be ruled out, particularly if demonstrators are overly disruptive or ignore police orders to disperse.
Avoid any possible protests due to the potential for clashes. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately. Follow all security personnel instructions. Allow additional travel time near gatherings. Confirm all business appointments.
