Jordan, Iraq, Syria: Retaliatory strikes likely following deadly drone attack on a US base in Jordan early Jan. 28
Escalating tensions and retaliatory strikes likely following drone attack on US base in Jordan that killed three Jan. 28
Retaliatory strikes against Iran-backed militias based in Iraq and Syria are likely after a drone strike killed three American military personnel and wounded at least 34 others in the US base "Tower 22" in northeastern Jordan, near the Syrian border, Jan. 28. The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella organization of Iran-backed armed groups, has claimed responsibility for the attack. Further attacks against US and coalition military forces are almost certain throughout the region.
Escalating tensions and tit-for-tat attacks, including drone and missile launches, in Iraq and Syria are possible over the coming weeks. Heightened security, as well as transport and business disruptions, are likely near US military bases and the site of any future attacks. Fighting could impact utilities, including power and water supply.
Heed the instructions of security forces. If an attack alert is issued in the general vicinity, stay indoors, away from windows and exterior walls. If possible, move to a ground floor, basement, or bunker. Maintain contact with your country's diplomatic mission.
