Liberia: Heightened security during presidential inauguration in Monrovia on Jan. 22

Officials to implement increased security measures during presidential inauguration in Monrovia, Liberia, Jan. 22.

Informational

Officials will implement heightened security measures in parts of Monrovia during the inauguration of President-elect Joseph Boakai on Jan. 22. There will be road diversions implemented on select roads, including to and from Roberts International Airport (ROB), where some types of vehicles, such as heavy trucks and motorbikes will not be allowed. Motorbikes will also not be permitted along the Tubman Boulevard. In the city center, security forces will restrict vehicle and pedestrian movement in some areas, notably around the Capitol Building, where the ceremony is scheduled.

Traffic and business disruptions are likely in parts of Monrovia until the ceremony concludes and visiting dignitaries depart. Protests denouncing Boakai’s victory remain possible. Security forces will likely swiftly disperse such gatherings.

Plan for transport and business disruptions on Jan. 22. Confirm all transport arrangements and allow additional time to reach destinations, including to and from ROB. Avoid all protests and areas where security personnel appear to be deployed. If violence occurs, immediately take shelter in a secure, nongovernment building. Heed all instructions from local authorities.
