Temporary commercial and communications disruptions are likely to occur during the blackout; cellular and mobile services could be affected. Traffic disruptions and longer driving times are possible during these periods due to malfunctioning traffic signals. Trains may also experience delays if outages impact signaling devices or overhead wires. Power outages could also result in the temporary unavailability of essential services such as ATMs and filling stations. There is an increased security threat during power outages. Blackouts could adversely affect security protocols, including alarm systems and electronic fences; opportunistic criminal activity could increase during electricity outages.

Monitor developments and keep battery-operated devices fully charged whenever possible. Identify business-critical functions that require a power supply. Monitor available warning apps/websites covering planned or unplanned power outages and monitor announcements from the utility. Remain cautious when driving or crossing streets if traffic signals are not functioning.

Malawi's electricity grid has remained vulnerable to sudden power cuts, and demand consistently exceeds supply. Recent rolling power cuts followed the passages of cyclones Ana in 2022 and Freddy in early 2023, which caused floods and landslides, and damaged road infrastructure and cable networks. Although the generators were reportedly spared, Malawi's hydropower plants were severely disrupted, causing significant power supply issues. Reports also allege that nationwide blackouts are also due to system failures and alleged sabotage, most likely by criminal groups stealing components.
