Activists likely to continue sporadic protest activity in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, through at least mid-February. Disruptions likely.

Warning

Activists affiliated with various organizations, including the Awami Action Committee (AAC), will likely continue staging their ongoing series of sporadic protests in Gilgit-Baltistan through at least mid-February. The purpose of the demonstrations is to denounce an increase in the price of subsidized wheat and demand multiple concessions. Since early January, protesters have intermittently gathered in several districts, including Astore, Diamer, Gilgit, Shigar, and Skardu.

As of Jan. 20, activists were reportedly staging a sit-in demonstration at the Gadi Bagh historical landmark in Gilgit District, as well as protests that were blocking the Karakoram Highway at three points in Nagar District. Demonstration organizers have threatened to continue their protest activity until their demands are met. Potential locations for additional gatherings include prominent government buildings, public squares, and thoroughfares. Well-attended gatherings are likely to draw thousands of participants.

Authorities will probably monitor such gatherings and could move to disperse overly unruly crowds. Isolated clashes between police and activists cannot be ruled out. Demonstrators will likely march along or block roadways, prompting localized transport disruptions. Related localized business disruptions are possible.

Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Allow additional travel time near gathering sites. Plan accordingly for potential localized business disruptions. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
