Panama: Activists likely to demonstrate through mid-January

Activists likely to demonstrate across Panama through mid-January. Localized disruptions and tight security likely.

Informational

Activists affiliated with the Union of Construction Workers of Panama (Sindicato Unico Nacional de Trabajadores de la Industria de la Construccion y Similares, SUNTRACS) are likely to continue protesting across Panama through mid-January. On Jan. 8, demonstrators gathered in several locations across the country, including Colon and Panama City, handing out leaflets about their cause and partially blocking roads. SUNTRACS have also called for activists to continue demonstrating in the coming days, and a march is planned near the Donoso copper mine from 08:30 Jan. 9. Activists have been demanding, among other things, that the government reopens bank accounts and permanently close the copper mine in Donoso. SUNTRACS members have also planned a meeting on Jan. 11 to consider taking further action if their demands are not met, which could include an indefinite strike and blockades.

Localized disruptions to businesses, public transport, and public services are likely in the coming days. Police will likely deploy to monitor demonstrations and may move to disperse protesters, which could prompt confrontations.

Avoid all demonstrations as a standard precaution. Seek alternative routes to circumvent the protest area. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
