Peru: Union from Machupicchu district, Cusco, maintains indefinite strike as of Jan. 26; inter-city transport suspended /update 1
Transport and business disruptions likely to continue in the Machupicchu district, Cusco, Peru, through late January due to a union strike.
As of Jan. 26, members of the Machu Picchu Popular Collective (Colectivo Popular Machu Picchu) maintain an indefinite strike to reject the privatization of ticket sales to Machupicchu's historical sites. Additionally, activists have associated protests in different areas of the Machupicchu District, including along the railways, forcing the temporary suspension of the train services connecting Ollantaytambo and Machupicchu, leaving tourists stranded. The strike was launched early Jan. 25. At least one person was injured in clashes between demonstrators and police in Macchupicchu Jan. 25. Machupicchu is located around 75 km (47 miles) northwest of Cusco, the capital of Cusco Region.
Further protests and clashes are possible while the strike continues, including near tourist sites; sit-in protests are possible near entry points to historical sites. Gatherings outside government buildings in the city of Cusco are also likely during the strike. Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near any demonstrations.
Avoid all protests as a precaution. Reconfirm business meetings and travel arrangements. Heed the instructions of security personnel. If violence occurs, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a nongovernmental building.
