Portugal: Unionized port workers to strike, demonstrate in Lisbon Jan. 31

Unionized port workers to protest, strike at port terminal and in central Lisbon, Portugal Jan. 31. Localized transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Unionized port workers employed by Silopor, a state-owned corporation that manages port storage and shipment for most grain in Portugal, plan to strike and protest in Lisbon on Jan. 31. The purpose of the work stoppage is to demand salary increases and that several other grievances be addresseed. Participants will first assemble at the Port of Lisbon's Trafaria Foodstuff Bulk Terminal before moving to the Ministry of Finance building in the city center for a second protest. It is unclear how many workers may attend the demonstrations, how they will move between the Trafaria Terminal and the Ministry of Finance, or what time the demonstrations will begin. Labor leaders assert that further similar strikes will take place if workers' demands are not met.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely at demonstration sites. Disruptions to some port operations and access to the facility cannot be ruled out during the strike.

Avoid all protests as a standard precaution. Reconfirm any business appointments at the Port of Lisbon and Ministry of Finance for Jan. 31. Allow additional time to reach destinations near demonstration sites. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers.
