Slovakia: Opposition activists plan to demonstrate nationwide Jan. 11
Opposition activists plan to protest nationwide in Slovakia, Jan. 11. Rally in Bratislava at SNP Square from 18:00.
Opposition politicians have called for protests in cities across Slovakia from 18:00 on Jan. 11. The purpose of the action is to denounce a government plan to dissolve a special prosecutorial office in charge of investigating corruption. It is unclear how many participants may attend; however, previous demonstrations through December drew several thousand participants.
Protests will occur in major urban centers including:
Bratislava: SNP Square
Banska Bystrica: SNP Square
Kosice: Freedom Square
Nitra: Pedestrian Area
Trencin: Sturovo Square
Zilina: Hlinkovo Square
Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near demonstration sites. Additional demonstrations are possible nationwide. Low-level confrontations between protesters and law enforcement officers cannot be ruled out.
Avoid the affected areas as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near the protest sites. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance.
