Slovakia: Opposition activists plan to demonstrate nationwide, Jan. 18 /update 1
Opposition activists plan to protest nationwide in Slovakia, 18:00 Jan. 18. Increased security, transport disruptions likely.
Opposition politicians have called for protests in cities across Slovakia from 18:00 Jan. 18. The purpose of the action is to denounce a government plan to dissolve a special prosecutorial office in charge of investigating corruption. It is unclear how many participants may attend; however, previous demonstrations through December drew several thousand participants, and over 20,000 participants attended a Jan. 11 demonstration in Bratislava.
Protests will occur in major urban centers including:
Bratislava: SNP Square
Banska Bystrica: SNP Square
Kosice: Freedom Square
Nitra: Pedestrian Area
Trencin: Sturovo Square
Zilina: Hlinkovo Square
Additional demonstrations are possible nationwide.
Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near demonstration sites. Low-level confrontations between protesters and law enforcement officers cannot be ruled out.
Avoid the affected areas as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near the protest sites. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance.
