Slovakia: Opposition activists to demonstrate nationwide on Feb. 1 /update 3
Opposition activists to protest nationwide in Slovakia from 18:00 Feb. 1. Increased security and transport disruptions likely.
Opposition activists plan to protest in cities across Slovakia from 18:00 on Feb. 1. The purpose of the action is to denounce a government plan to dissolve a special prosecutorial office in charge of investigating corruption. It is unclear how many participants may attend; however, organizers reported that a Jan. 18 demonstration in Bratislava drew about 26,000 attendees.
Planned gatherings in major urban centers include:
Banska Bystrica: SNP Square
Bratislava: SNP Square
Kosice: Tower Gate (Dolna Brana) in Freedom Square
Nitra: Pedestrian Area
Trencin: Sturovo Square
Zilina: Hlinkovo Square
Additional demonstrations are possible in other cities nationwide.
Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near demonstration sites. Low-level confrontations between protesters and law enforcement officers cannot be ruled out.
Avoid the affected areas as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near the protest sites. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance.
