Opposition leader stabbed in Gadeok Island, Busan, South Korea, Jan. 2. Increased security certain; limited disruptions possible.

An assailant armed with a knife stabbed Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung at around 10:27 Jan. 2 in Daehang-dong, Gadeok Island, Busan. Lee sustained injuries due to the incident that occurred during his visit to the construction site of a new airport. Authorities have detained the perpetrator but have not clarified the motive behind the attack.

Heightened security is likely near the incident site and nearby areas over the coming hours as investigations continue. Localized business and transport disruptions are possible. Lee's supporters may gather near the incident site as well as outside the Pusan National University Hospital, where Lee is admitted.
