Authorities are responding to Russian missile strikes targeting various parts of Ukraine, including Kharkiv, Khmelnytskyi, Kryviy Rih, and Zaporizhzhia, early on Jan. 8. The strikes have left at least four people dead and 33 injured. Kharkiv's industrial area and the village of Zmiiv, south of the city, were reportedly hit. In Zaporizhzhia, at least six missiles hit the city causing damage to residential buildings. In the Kryvyi Rih area, one person was reportedly killed and one residential building was damaged. In Khmelnytskyi, at least two people died as a result of the airstrike, and several public and residential buildings were affected. In Dnipropetrovsk Region, the town of Novomoskovsk reported 19 injured following an explosion near a bus.

Heightened security measures will likely be in place across Ukraine, particularly around impact sites, over the coming hours and days. Localized ground travel and business disruptions are probable. Further Russian missile attacks against Ukraine are likely in the coming days.

Avoid impact sites until authorities give the all-clear. Shelter in place if there is fighting or airstrikes in the area. Stay away from windows and exterior walls if officials report incoming rocket or artillery fire. Follow the instructions of local security personnel, especially when instructed to seek refuge in air-raid shelters. Maintain contact with diplomatic representations. Do not approach suspected unexploded ordnance.
