Unionized teachers to stage marches in Caracas, Venezuela, Jan. 15 to demand higher pay; increased security, transport disruptions likely.
Unionized teachers plan to stage protest marches in Caracas on Jan. 15, coinciding with Teachers' Day. The purpose of the demonstrations is to demand higher salaries. Protest organizers have announced that participants will gather at four locations: the Ministry of Education; Parque Carabobo; the Ministry of Labor; and Plaza de la Moneda. Protesters gathering at the latter three locations plan to march to the Ministry of Education. The time at which the protest activity is intended to start was not immediately reported; however, the demonstrations will probably begin in the morning hours.
Police will likely deploy to monitor the protest marches and may attempt to prevent demonstrators from gathering near government buildings. Clashes between demonstrators and security forces cannot be ruled out. The protest activity and any heightened security measures that authorities may impose will likely cause localized transport disruptions.
Avoid all protest activity as a precaution. Allow additional time to reach your destination if operating in Caracas Jan. 15. If violence breaks out in your area, immediately depart the vicinity and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
