Albania: Opposition activists to protest in central Tirana Feb. 20 /update 1
Opposition activists to protest at Prime Minister's Office in Tirana, Albania, from 17:30 Feb. 20. Tight security, disruptions certain.
Opposition activists plan to demonstrate at the Prime Minister's Office in Tirana from 17:30 Feb. 20 to denounce the current government. Former Prime Minister Sali Berisha has called for supporters to rally. Authorities will mobilize 1,100 law enforcement officers to monitor the event and enforce road closures near the demonstration site; road closures will occur from 15:30 and last until the event ends. It is unclear how many participants may attend; however, previous protests supporting Berisha drew up to several thousand participants.
Heightened security and localized transport disruptions will almost certainly occur near the protest site. Confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers cannot be ruled out.
Avoid the affected area as a standard precaution. Reconfirm the status of road closures before traveling and consider seeking alternative routes to circumvent the impacted area. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance.
