Chad: Assailants kidnap Polish national in Dono Manga locality, Tandjile Region, Feb. 9.
Search and rescue operations likely after kidnapping of Polish national in Dono Manga locality, Tandjile Region, Chad, Feb. 9.
Search and rescue operations are likely after unidentified assailants kidnapped a Polish doctor at the Saint Michel Hospital in the Dono Manga locality, Tandjile Region, early on Feb. 9. Attackers initially disguised as patients and abducted two doctors, including a Mexican national, in the absence of military forces attending prayers. The Mexican doctor escaped during a shootout with securities forces. Polish authorities confirmed the incident and announced that Chadian and French troops were looking for the victim. Criminals likely carried out the kidnapping for financial gains. There have been no reported ransom demands.
Localized transport disruptions are likely in areas subject to search-and-rescue operations; security forces may establish checkpoints and roadblocks and carry out searches of vehicles. Clashes involving kidnappers and security forces cannot be ruled out.
Plan for increased security and related disruptions around the incident site. Consult local security partners on the viability of traveling in and around the impacted location. Remain courteous and cooperative if approached and questioned by security personnel. Maintain contact with diplomatic representations.
Although kidnappings of foreign nationals are not common in Chad, such incidents have been reported in recent years. Porous borders with neighboring Nigeria, Niger, Sudan, Libya, and CAR, have contributed to poor security conditions as well and the presence of various armed criminal or militant elements.
