Chad: Authorities ban nationwide protest scheduled Feb. 24 amid ongoing six-day nationwide strike /update 1

Authorities ban nationwide protest scheduled Feb. 24 amid ongoing six-day strike across Chad since Feb. 20 over fuel prices.

Informational

Authorities have banned nationwide demonstrations scheduled for Feb. 24. The opposition group, Consultation Group of Political Actors (Le Groupe de Concertation des Acteurs Politiques, GCAP), had called for protests across the country from 06:00-09:00 if authorities failed to nullify a decision to raise fuel prices.

The banning order coincides with an ongoing nationwide general strike led by the Federation of Trade Unions of Chad (Union des Syndicats du Tchad, UST); the action was launched on Feb. 20 after the government raised fuel prices. The work stoppage is planned to run through at least Feb. 25.

Despite the ban, some activists may gather on Feb. 24. Related protests have been reported in N’Djamena on Feb. 20 and remain possible through at least Feb. 25. The potential for clashes with security forces is elevated if crowds form. The strike may cause disruptions to transport, government services, business operations, healthcare services, and other sectors. Some sectors, including hospitals, should guarantee a minimum level of service.

Avoid all protests. Leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Heed instructions from security services. Reconfirm business appointments and plan accordingly for disruptions to transport and other services amid the strike.
