Chad: Trade unions extend existing nationwide strike through at least March 11

Trade unions in Chad extend existing nationwide strike through March 11; disruptions in various sectors and related demonstrations possible.

Warning

The Federation of Trade Unions of Chad (Union des Syndicats du Tchad, UST) reportedly called on Feb. 26 for its nationwide general strike to be extended for an additional two weeks through at least March 11. The purpose of the work stoppage, which began on Feb. 20, is to denounce elevated fuel prices and demand that governmental authorities adhere to their commitments stipulated in a three-year social pact. As part of the labor action, strike organizers have called for the maintenance of a minimum level of service in hospitals.

The work stoppage may cause disruptions in various sectors, including in business, education, healthcare, and government services, among others. Strike-related demonstrations cannot be ruled out. Authorities will likely deploy a heightened security presence to the sites of any such gatherings that materialize. Clashes between demonstrators and security forces are possible, especially if security forces attempt to forcibly disperse crowds.

Avoid any strike-related demonstrations that materialize as a precaution. Leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Reconfirm business appointments and plan accordingly for disruptions to transport and other services in various sectors during the strike period. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and your home government.
