Chad: Trade unions launch six-day nationwide strike Feb. 20 after government raises fuel prices

Trade union confederation launches six-day strike across Chad Feb. 20 over fuel prices. Transport and business disruptions possible.

Informational

The Federation of Trade Unions of Chad (Union des Syndicats du Tchad, UST) has launched a nationwide general strike from Feb. 20 after the government raised fuel prices. The work stoppage is planned to run through at least Feb. 25. UST representatives said that an indefinite strike, along with other protest actions, will ensue if the government does not revoke the decision. A minimum level of service should be guaranteed in some sectors, including hospitals.

The strike may cause disruptions to transport, government services, business operations, healthcare services, and other sectors. Related protests have been reported in N’Djamena on Feb. 20 and are possible through Feb. 25. Clashes are possible if security forces attempt to forcibly disperse crowds.

Reconfirm business appointments and plan accordingly for disruptions to transport and other services. Avoid all strike-related protests as a precaution. Leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Heed instructions from security services.
