Colombia: Lingering heightened security, disruptions likely in Bogota after security forces disperse protesters from Supreme Court entrance Feb. 8

Security forces disperse protesters blockading Supreme Court of Justice in Bogota, Colombia, Feb. 8; lingering heightened security likely.

Warning

Authorities will likely maintain a heightened security presence near the Supreme Court of Justice in Bogota over the coming hours after security forces dispersed protesters who were blocking access to the building Feb. 8. The demonstrators, supporters of President Gustavo Petro, gathered outside the facility to demand the selection of a new attorney general, with some blocking entry to and exit from the building. Clashes were reported between protesters and security forces, who ultimately dispersed the demonstrators from the doors with tear gas and allowed magistrates and other administrative staff to evacuate the building.

Lingering transport disruptions are likely in areas subject to protest activity and heightened security. Further clashes between demonstrators and security forces cannot be ruled out over the short term.

Avoid all protest activity as a precaution. Allow additional time to travel near the Supreme Court of Justice; consider taking alternative routes to circumvent the area and any lingering disruptions. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
