Colombia: Unionized teachers to protest nationwide, Feb. 8
Unionized teachers to protest in multiple cities of Colombia on Feb. 8 to oppose actions by the country's Attorney General.
Unionized teachers, affiliated with the Colombian Federation of Education Workers (Federacion Colombiana de Trabajadores de la Educacion, FECODE), plan to hold protests in multiple locations throughout Colombia on Feb. 8 to denounce alleged attacks and persecution from the country's Attorney General's Office. They are also calling for the selection of a new Attorney General.
Protests are scheduled in multiple locations, including:
Bogota: Outside the Supreme Court of Justice, 08:00
Bucaramanga: Outside the local office of the Attorney General, 09:00
Cali: March from Glorieta de Avenida Estacion to Plazoleta de San Francisco, 09:00
Medellin: Parque de las Luces, 10:00
Additionally, supporters of President Gustavo Petro plan to have another rally at Plaza de Bolivar in Bogota, starting at 12:00.
Protests in other cities are likely, including Cartagena, Barranquilla, and Cucuta. Thousands are likely to participate in most demonstrations, especially in Bogota. Transport and business disruptions are likely, as is heightened security near government buildings. Clashes are unlikely, but cannot be entirely ruled out.
Avoid all protests as a precaution. Allow additional time to reach your destination if operating in major cities of Colombia Feb. 8.
FECODE members are protesting an ongoing investigation by the Attorney General Office against the union and the campaign of now President Gustavo Petro, over an alleged illegal donation. Authorities have searched FECODE offices. Petro has criticized the Attorney General over the investigation and has called on supporters to demonstrate in the streets.
