Cyprus: Farmers to rally and stage tractor protest march in central Nicosia Feb. 8

Farmers to rally, stage tractor protest march in Nicosia, Cyprus, Feb. 8. Increased security and localized transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Farmers from across Cyprus plan to demonstrate in central Nicosia on Feb. 8 to demand support for the agricultural protest movements currently taking place across Europe. Participants will assemble with their tractors and other vehicles at the Old GSP Stadium at around 10:00 before staging a vehicular road march to the European Union House on Lord Byron Avenue. City police have advised the public that Lord Byron Avenue will be closed to traffic from the intersection with Georgiou Griva Digeni to the traffic lights at the Greek Embassy for the duration of the demonstration. While it is unclear how long the event may last, unconfirmed reports indicate that the protesters could remain in the area into the morning of Feb. 9.

Authorities will almost certainly deploy an increased police presence in the area to monitor the event. Localized traffic disruptions will probably persist into the morning commute of Feb. 9. Violence is unlikely.

As a precaution, avoid the announced demonstration area through at least the mid-morning of Feb. 9. Allow extra time to reach nearby destinations in Nicosia until the protest has ended and the participants have vacated the area. Reconfirm business appointments at the European Union House. Heed the instructions of local law enforcement officers.
