Germany: Munich Security Conference to prompt increased security, transport disruptions, and protests Feb. 16-18
Increased security, transport disruptions, and protests likely in Munich, Germany, Feb. 16-18 during annual security conference.
Demonstrations, localized disruptions, and increased security are likely in Munich during the city's annual Munich Security Conference (MSC) Feb. 16-18. Approximately 60 heads of state and over 85 other government officials will attend the event at the Hotel Bayerischer Hof. Authorities have established a security zone around the venue, extending north to include Salvatorstrasse, Salvatorplatz, and the Rosewood Hotel. Traffic and parking restrictions will be in place along several roads, including Promenadeplatz. Additionally, the airspace over the city within a 5.5-km (3.4-miles) radius around the Sedlinger-Tor-Platz will be closed to air traffic, including drones, between 07:00-19:00. Officials have announced plans to deploy more than 5,000 additional officers to secure various areas, including train stations and stops. At least 20 demonstrations are planned during the event, with more impromptu protests likely over the coming days. Announced rally locations include Stachus, Konigsplatz, Odeonsplatz, and Marienplatz.
Security measures will probably include temporary checkpoints and impromptu road closures, which could cause transportation disruptions and increased traffic congestion throughout the affected area. Extraordinarily tight security is also likely at Munich International Airport (MUC) as various dignitaries arrive and depart the conference.
Exercise caution near the conference venue and surrounding areas. Strictly heed instructions from authorities; plan accordingly for localized road travel delays. Avoid any protests that occur and immediately depart the area at the first sign of any security disruption.
