Guinea: Unions announce nationwide strike from Feb. 26

Labor unions announce nationwide strike across public and private sectors in Guinea from Feb. 26. Business and transport disruptions likley.

Warning

The National Confederation of Workers of Guinea (CNTG) is planning to launch an indefinite nationwide strike from Feb. 26. According to CNTG leaders, public, private, and independent workers will participate in the work stoppage. The union is demanding the government release Sekou Jamal Pendessa, the secretary general of the Union of Press Professionals of Guinea (SPPG), and lift ongoing internet access restrictions. CNTG leadership did not immediately announce associated protests with the strike; however, a government ban on public demonstrations remains in effect.

Significant disruptions to public transport, business, and government services, including healthcare and education, will likely occur across Guinea on Feb. 26. Protests are most likely to be held in Conakry and other major urban centers. Heightened security measures will almost certainly be in place near any protest site. If crowds gather, security personnel may use force to disperse demonstrators, such as rubber bullets, tear gas, and live ammunition.

Reconfirm the status of all travel bookings, as well as business and personal appointments. Plan for likely delays and congestion on available services. Do not check out of accommodation until onward travel is confirmed. Avoid all protests that may materialize. If violence breaks out in your location, immediately leave the vicinity and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Remain polite and nonconfrontational if stopped at a security checkpoint or questioned by police. Adhere to all instructions issued by local officials and your home government.
