India: Congress Party (INC) leaders to hold protest outside Andhra Pradesh Secretariat in Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh, Feb. 22

Protest to occur outside Andhra Pradesh Secretariat in Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh, India, Feb. 22. Tight security likely.

Informational

Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Y.S. Sharmila announced plans to protest in front of the Andhra Pradesh Secretariat in Amaravati Feb. 22. The action is to demand justice for the state's unemployed youth and student community. While turnout remains unclear, hundreds of supporters could attend the gathering.

Authorities will probably maintain heightened security, including deployment of security personnel and imposition of security cordons, around the secretariat through the evening of Feb. 22. While the gathering will likely pass peacefully, isolated scuffles are possible if police attempt to forcibly disperse the gathering or if activists attempt to breach security cordons. Traffic disruptions are likely along sections of National Highway (NH) 16, as well as Vijayawada Road, especially if supporters hold road blockades or street marches.

Amaravati is approximately 14 km (8.6 miles) west of Vijayawada.

Avoid the protest as a precaution and allow additional travel time near the affected area. Monitor local media for additional protest plans as organizers may not announce them in advance. Leave the area immediately if violence breaks out. Heed all security and traffic advisories.
