Iraq, Syria: US military reportedly launches retaliatory airstrikes on IRGC and Iran-backed militia targets in countries as of early Feb. 3
US launches retaliatory airstrikes on targets linked to IRGC, Iran-backed militias in Iraq and Syria early Feb. 3 following Jan. 28 attack.
US military forces have reportedly launched retaliatory airstrikes targeting Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and affiliated militia groups in Iraq and Syria as of early Feb. 3. The move comes after a drone attack, attributed by the US to the Islamic Resistance in Iraq umbrella group of Tehran-supported militias, killed three US service members and wounded more than 40 other troops at the Tower 22 base in far northeastern Jordan Jan. 28. US Central Command confirmed that US forces struck more than 85 IRGC and Iran-backed militia targets, including "command and control operations centers, intelligence centers, rockets, and missiles, and unmanned aerial vehicle storages, and logistics and munition supply chain facilities."
Additional US airstrikes targeting IRGC and Iran-backed militia targets are likely in Iraq and Syria over the short term. Iran-backed groups may also launch further drone or projectile attacks on US and allied military personnel in the region over the coming days.
If incoming projectiles are reported or warning sirens sound in the general vicinity, report to the nearest bomb shelter and await further instructions from authorities. If there is no shelter nearby, stay indoors and away from windows and exterior walls. If possible, move to a ground floor or basement. Maintain contact with your diplomatic representation.
