Italy: Increased security measures reported in Rome, amid Rome-Feyenoord football match Feb. 22
Presence of Feyenoord football fans prompts increased security measures in Rome, Italy, Feb. 22; tight security likely.
Heightened security is imposed in Rome Feb. 22 ahead of the Rome-Feyenoord football match, held at the Olympic Stadium from 21:00. Authorities deployed at least 1100 law enforcement officers surrounding the stadium, in central Rome and by Ciampino Airport (CIA). Feyenoord football fans have been banned from attending the match and will likely gather in public establishments around Colosseo Square in the hours before and after the match.
Localized transport and road travel disruptions are likely. Confrontations and violence between rival groups, as well as between supporters and police, are possible. Although unlikely to be targeted, bystanders would face an incidental risk of being caught in any violence.
Avoid the affected areas as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions. Heed instructions from security services and leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Check for disruptions and allow extra time for travel in the affected areas through Feb. 22.
