Italy: Unionized workers to participate in general strike nationwide March 8
Unions to hold general strike across Italy March 8 in observance of International Women's Day. Transport, medical, other disruptions likely.
Unionized workers across Italy will participate in a general strike March 8 in observance of International Women's Day. Unions in the ground transport, air travel, maritime travel, shipping, healthcare, and education sectors have confirmed their participation.
Significant disruptions will likely impact public ground transport (including buses, trams, and trains, among other modes of transport), as well as air travel, maritime travel, shipping services, and medical services nationwide. The disruptions will likely linger through the morning hours of March 9. Although it is likely that authorities will announce mandatory minimum service hours in some sectors, disruptions will probably continue during these periods. Participating workers may conduct rallies in urban centers; heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near any demonstrations that materialize. Confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers cannot be ruled out.
Reconfirm all travel, shipping, and medical appointments scheduled March 8. Allow additional time for all travel via public ground transport, air travel, or maritime travel. Avoid all demonstrations as a standard precaution. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur. Strictly heed all instructions from authorities.
