Emergency crews responding to fire caused by gas explosion in Embakasi area of Nairobi, Kenya, as of early Feb. 2. Casualties reported.

Critical

As of early Feb. 2, emergency personnel are responding to a fire in the Embakasi area of Nairobi. Reports indicate an explosion during gas refiling operations at the Kentainers Company Ltd gas plant near the Skyline Apartments in the Embakasi area caused the fire. At least two people were killed, and 100 homes were damaged. Authorities may update casualty figures in the coming hours. Authorities have asked the public to avoid the area. The blaze and fire occurred near the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO); however, there have been no reports of disruptions to flight operations.

Increased security and localized transport disruptions are certain as authorities continue to battle the blaze and investigate the incident. Officials may evacuate nearby buildings as a precaution. Large columns of smoke may cause visibility issues and prompt flight disruptions at NBO.

Avoid the area and consider seeking alternative routes to circumvent the impacted area. Reconfirm flights if traveling via NBO through at least the morning of Feb. 2.
