Emergency operations are ongoing in Nairobi's Embakasi area the morning of Feb. 2 following an explosion and fire earlier in the night. A truck carrying gas cylinders exploded in the in the Mradi area of Embakasi around 23:30 Feb. 1, launching cylinders into surrounding buildings. Authorities confirmed at least three deaths and 270 injuries from the blast and fire. While the fire occurred near Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO), flights are operating as normal.

Increased security and localized transport disruptions are certain as authorities continue to battle the blaze and investigate the incident. Officials may evacuate nearby buildings as a precaution. Large columns of smoke may cause visibility issues and prompt flight disruptions at NBO.

Avoid the area and consider seeking alternative routes to circumvent the impacted area. Reconfirm flights if traveling via NBO through at least the morning of Feb. 2.
