Increased security likely following armed clashes in Ciudad Guzman, Jalisco State, Mexico, overnight Feb. 16-17. Monitor local developments.

Warning

As of early Feb. 17, increased security is highly likely in Ciudad Guzman, Jalisco State, following armed clashes between armed civilians and security personnel overnight Feb. 16-17. According to reports, trucks were used to erect blockades, while the armed civilians and security personnel clashed on the 429 highway on the southwestern outskirts of the city. Traffic disruptions were reported in the area in connection with the incident. Authorities did not immediately confirm the number of casualties sustained in the clashes.

While officials did not immediately specify the identities of the armed civilians involved in the fighting, the clashes almost certainly involved individuals affiliated with drug-trafficking organizations as the region is part of a major smuggling corridor. This is especially likely as local authorities announced the arrest of an individual involved with organized crime prior to the violence erupting.

Security forces will likely maintain a heightened security posture in the area over the coming hours. Further clashes may break out near Ciudad Guzman over the short term.

Avoid the area until security forces give the all-clear. Allow for additional transport time if operating in nearby parts of Jalisco State. If violence breaks out in your area, immediately depart the scene and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Heed instructions issued by security personnel.
