Morocco: Activists plan nationwide protests Feb. 20

Activists in Morocco plan nationwide protests Feb. 20. Increased security, localized transport disruptions likely.

Warning

The Moroccan Social Front group has called for nationwide protests on Feb. 20 to commemorate the anniversary of the 2011 demonstrations, as well as the high cost of food, fuel, and other essential commodities amid poor economic conditions. Thousands of individuals could attend the demonstrations. Major cities, such as Casablanca, Fez, Marrakesh, and Rabat, will likely have a large number of participants. Prominent protest locations include public squares and government buildings.

Increased security and localized transport disruptions are likely near any gathering site through late Feb. 20. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out, particularly if demonstrators are overly disruptive, ignore police orders to disperse, or demonstrations take on an overtly anti-government tone.

Avoid all protests due to the potential for clashes. Heed the advice of security personnel. Allow additional time to reach destinations near the affected areas on Feb. 20.

Morocco's Feb. 20 Movement materialized due to mass protests inspired by the Arab Spring that erupted across the Middle East and North Africa in 2011. The demonstrations in the Kingdom began on Feb. 20 and were aimed at political, social, and economic reforms. Activists also demanded an end to corruption and expansion of individual political rights. While the protests succeeded in getting King Mohammad VI to introduce some constitutional reforms in 2011, critics maintain that the movement failed to address the root causes of public discontent stemming from public corruption, economic mismanagement, and unemployment.
