New Caledonia: Officials enforcing curfew measures in Yate Commune through Feb. 22

Officials enforcing curfew measures in Yate Commune, New Caledonia, through Feb. 22. Increased security likely. Avoid the area.

Warning

Officials are imposing an 18:00-06:00 nightly curfew in Yate Commune through Feb. 22 following violent clashes between rival clans in the area. The directive comes after fighting between two Kanak communities within the Touaouro tribe over a longstanding land-related dispute the evening of Feb. 17, killing two people and injuring four others. Public gatherings and movement are prohibited during curfew hours. Authorities will also restrict alcohol sales and the transport of weapons and ammunition through March 3.

Heightened security presence is likely in the affected area; authorities have deployed additional security personnel to Yate. Further communal violence, as well as clashes with police, are possible. Business and transport disruptions may occur during curfew hours. Security measures and checkpoints could also cause localized transport disruptions in Yate.

Avoid travel to the impacted area until authorities give the all-clear. Confirm business appointments, road status, and transport reservations if operating in the area. Heed all instructions of local officials. Maintain contact with diplomatic representations.
