Demonstrations likely in Waitangi area, New Zealand, ahead of and amid national day holiday Feb. 6; localized transport disruptions likely.
Activists will likely stage demonstrations in the Waitangi area ahead of and amid the observance of Waitangi Day, New Zealand's national day, Feb. 6. Holiday-related gatherings will likely begin in the town on Feb. 3, including demonstrations denouncing proposed government policies that some indigenous Maori activists assert would be detrimental to their communities if enacted. Maori activists reportedly plan to stage a related march from Cape Reinga to Waitangi Feb. 2-6, organizing demonstrations along the way in Kaitaia and Taipa; activists also plan to hold gatherings in various parts of the Waitangi area Feb. 6. Tens of thousands of people will likely participate in Waitangi Day events in Waitangi, including concerts, political gatherings, and speeches; thousands of people could participate in indigenous rights demonstrations in the area.
Authorities will almost certainly monitor holiday-related events through at least Feb. 6, including any demonstrations that materialize. Transport disruptions are likely in areas subject to heightened security measures or protest activity, including along the route of the Feb. 2-6 march from Cape Reinga to Waitangi. Officials may also close some roads amid Waitangi Day events. While any protests that occur will likely remain peaceful, minor skirmishes between protesters and police cannot be ruled out.
Avoid any demonstrations that materialize as a precaution. Exercise heightened vigilance in the vicinity of all holiday-related public gatherings. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent large public gatherings and any related transport disruptions. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
