Nigeria: Suspected bandits kidnap about 40 people and kill four in Kaura-Namoda LGA, Zamfara State, Feb. 13
Increased security likely after bandits abduct 40 people in Kaura-Namoda LGA, Zamfara State, Nigeria, Feb. 13.
Authorities will likely maintain an increased security posture in parts of Kaura-Namoda Local Government Area (LGA) over the coming days following an attack on Kasuwa Daji. An unspecified number of armed assaillants assaulted the town during the pre-dawn hours of Feb. 13, kidnapping at least 40 people. Four other persons, including two police officers, were killed in the incident. No group has as yet claimed responsibility for the attack; there have been no reported ransom demands.
According to local officials, the government has deployed reinforcements to the area. Security forces will likely conduct operations to apprehend the attackers and rescue the abductees, potentially establishing roadblocks and checkpoints, as well as searching vehicles and pedestrians. Armed clashes between suspects and security forces cannot be ruled out.
Consult local security partners on the viability of traveling in and around the impacted locations. Remain courteous and cooperative if approached and questioned by security personnel. Do not discuss plans and routes publicly. If operating in the area in the long term, vary routes and times of travel and ensure the use of secure transport. Maintain contact with diplomatic representations.
The incident highlights the pervasive insecurity in northwestern Nigeria, where violence persists despite the various measures implemented, such as increased security operations, curfews, and business restrictions. Armed gangs engage in various criminal activities, including cattle rustling, looting, extortion, and kidnapping for ransom. Criminal and extremist groups often target communities that do not comply with their demands, or accuse them of transmitting information to security forces.
