Pakistan: Tight security likely in Balochistan Province through early February following series of explosions ahead of Feb. 8 elections

Tight security likely in Balochistan, Pakistan, through early February after series of explosions reported ahead of Feb. 8 elections.

Warning

Authorities will likely maintain an enhanced security posture in Balochistan Province through at least early February following a recent series of explosions ahead of the Feb. 8 general elections. On Feb. 6, an explosion occurred in Kech District's Hoshab area after unidentified assailants targeted a National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) government building with a grenade. On the same day, another explosion occurred near a politician's residence in the Surdu area of Panjgur District. Officials did not immediately confirm any casualties in connection with the incidents, and no claims of responsibility were immediately reported. Additional small-scale explosions have occurred in other parts of the province since mid-January.

Officials have also vowed to restrict internet services ahead of the elections in various locations, including in Chaman, Mach, and Turbat. Authorities could order additional enhanced security measures, including temporary public movement restrictions, depending on the severity of any perceived threats. Security personnel could also extend existing measures to encompass additional areas depending on operational needs. Further isolated security incidents cannot be ruled out, including small-scale explosions targeting government buildings as well as clashes between Pakistani forces and militants.

Exercise increased caution if operating in Balochistan Province. Minimize exposure to polling stations, government buildings, military installations, crowded places, and other similar areas that could be potential targets of attacks. Confirm business and transport arrangements in advance. Maintain contact with your diplomatic mission. Heed all official transport and security advisories.

The Feb. 6 explosions follow a pattern of escalating violence and security challenges in Balochistan Province. The region has recently experienced a series of security incidents, including a Jan. 17 explosion near the Civil Secretariat Building in Quetta that injured multiple people. Security forces also reportedly killed 24 militants in Kolpur and Mach in recent days. Additionally, tensions between Iran and Pakistan, triggered by cross-border missile attacks ostensibly targeting militants, have exacerbated security concerns in border areas, and there is a potential for further escalatory actions between the countries.
