Tight security measures at border of Lanao del Norte and Lanao del Sur provinces, Philippines, as of Feb. 21. Further clashes possible.

Informational

Authorities are increasing security in towns near the border of Lanao del Sur and Lanao del Norte provinces as of Feb. 21. Officials state that retaliatory attacks by terrorist group Dawlah Islamiyah (DI) remain possible following clashes in Barangay Ramain, Munai Town, Lanao del Norte Province, that killed at least six security forces and three militants Feb. 18.

Authorities will likely maintain heightened security in the coming weeks and may enact additional checkpoints along major roads, airports, transport hubs, shopping malls, and other crowded places and key installations. Officials may conduct more intensive screenings of travelers and vehicles. Associated business disruptions may occur. Security forces are conducting further counterterrorism operations; clashes with militant groups remain possible.

Munai Town is approximately 24 km (14. miles) southwest of Marawi.

If traveling in the affected area, heed all official instructions and remain nonconfrontational when interacting with security personnel. Use secure transport if traveling between cities in Lanao del Norte and Lanao del Sur provinces is necessary and allow additional time to reach destinations due to possible checkpoint delays. Confirm business appointments in the affected area. Obtain documents from employers if traveling overnight for official purposes. Always carry personal identification. Foreign travelers should always carry their passport and documents stating their purpose of travel. Register and maintain contact with your diplomatic mission.

Security forces confirmed that the Feb. 18 clashes in Munai are part of an ongoing effort to neutralize the perpetrators of the Dec. 2 fatal bombing at the Mindanao State University (MSU) that killed at least four people and wounded 50 others. Local media sources indicate that two of the terrorists wounded in the clashes are cousins of the mastermind of the bomb attack. The latest incidents emphasize the persistent security challenges in the Mindanao region despite authorities lifting the state of national emergency in July 28, 2023.
