Philippines: Unionized healthcare workers and teachers plan nationwide protests Feb. 14

Unionized workers to stage protests across the Philippines, Feb. 14. Increased security, transport and business disruptions likely.

Informational

Multiple rallies are planned in the Philippines, Feb. 14.

  • Unionized healthcare workers led by the Alliance of Health Workers (AHW) will gather in front of the Department of Health (DOH) from 08:30 and start marching along Mendiola Street, Manila, from 09:30. The action is to denounce poor working conditions and demand increased salaries.

  • Teachers groups are staging rallies to press the government to increase public teachers' salaries at the following locations:

    • Manila Science High School in Manila

    • Barangka National High School in Marikina

    • Vicas Market in Caloocan

    • Manggahan Elementary School in Pasig

    • Justice Cecilia Munoz Palma High School in Quezon City

    • Lagro High School in Quezon City

Additional unannounced rallies are likely nationwide through Feb. 14. Typical event venues include public squares, near government offices, on university campuses, museums, and major thoroughfares. Hundreds to thousands of people could join each event, with the largest attendance likely at gatherings in Metro Manila.

Authorities will likely bolster security around protest sites and at government buildings. Localized transport and business disruptions are possible, especially if protestors march on or block roadways. Scuffles are possible if police forcibly disperse the demonstration or activists attempt to breach security cordons.

Avoid any demonstrations as a precaution and to minimize travel delays. Seek updated information from local contacts on protest locations and related disruptions, as organizers may not announce details in advance. Plan for possible localized transport and business disruptions near rallies and seek alternative routes to circumvent the affected areas. If violence erupts nearby, immediately depart the area and seek shelter at a safe, non-governmental building. Heed all official traffic and security advisories.
