Portugal: Opposing groups plan to gather in downtown Lisbon Feb. 3

Opposing groups plan to hold gatherings in downtown Lisbon, Portugal, Feb. 3. Increased security likely. Clashes possible.

Warning

Two rival groups plan to gather in downtown Lisbon Feb. 3.

  • 16:00: Anti-racist organization Rede de Apoio Mutuo plan to hold a multicultural festival at Largo do Intendente. The purpose of the event is to denounce racism and anti-muslim prejudice.

  • 18:00: Far-right organization Grupo 1143 plans to hold an anti-Islam protest march at Largo de Camoes. The exact march route is unclear.

A few hundred people could participate in each event. Authorities will almost certainly deploy additional security personnel to monitor the events. Localized transport disruptions are likely near the gathering venues and along the march route. Clashes between police and activists, as well as between members of opposing groups, are possible. Security forces could use force to disperse unruly crowds. Associated localized business disruptions may occur.

Avoid the gathering venues due to possible clashes. If violence occurs nearby, immediately depart the area and seek shelter at a safe nongovernmental building. Plan for localized transport disruptions. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
